Unhealthy Mental Habits That Can Distract You From Your Business
Running a business is hard enough as it is, but many people make it even harder on themselves. Unhealthy mental habits can distract you from your business and can slow you down or derail you.
To start with, here are 3 unhealthy mental habits that could distract you and hurt your business. Keep these in mind and look for the warning signs.
1. Getting Angry
There’s simply no way that getting angry helps you in business. When you get angry, your emotion overwhelms and blinds you. Have you ever sent a quick email or Facebook post in response to something you read without thinking twice? I have. Huge mistake.
Learn to control your anger and always make decisions from a place of calm or reason. A good question to ask your self is, “Would I be comfortable with my mom reading this?”
2. Self- Doubt
It’s only natural that when you start or are running a business you’ll have your fair share of self doubt. But too much self doubt can keep you from taking actions that need to be taken to grow your business.
When self doubt raises its ugly head, remember that every single business owner, offline or online, was inexperienced and unsure of themselves to some degree when they started out. No one is a born business owner…they grow to become one.
There will always be people ahead of you and behind you on the road to success…just share what you know. You are special and have your own unique voice. Don’t hide it. People aren’t looking for perfection. They are looking for help.
3. Thinking You Know What You Don’t
One of the worst things for a business owner to say is, “I know that already.” For example,it’s dangerous to make assumptions about your target market based on what you think they like.
You need objective data about your market on which to base your decisions. If you are too set in your own opinions, you may be ignoring important new information that comes along. Keep your mind open and know what you don’t know. Mark Twain, known for many great quotes, said:
It Is
Wiser
To Find Out
Than to Suppose
Be willing to ask your market questions or get active in forums or Facebook to see what people are asking. A free tool you can use to create surveys is Survey Monkey.
When you have been in business for a while it can be easy to forget what new people struggle with. And always be willing to learn new things. The basics of business stay the same but tools and strategies can change rapidly.
